We get asked often by clients why should they set up a Facebook Business page and not just continue using their Facebook personal profile for their business. Here’s just some reasons why a Facebook Page is better.

Facebook Insights – loads of data on your visitors.
Facebook Tabs – use apps within the tabs for more functionality.
Facebook Offers – official way to promote a deal you have.
Limits – personal profiles limited to 5,000 ‘Friends’, no limit on pages ‘Likes’.
Advertising – create ads that target people with relevant interests and attract new customers.
Assign Admin Roles – have an employee or multiple employees help manage the account.
Facebook Scheduling – easily schedule posts to engage better with your customers.
Facebook Places -you can also connect your Page to a Place. As a result, the days and hours of operation are visible under your Cover Photo.

How do I convert my personal profile to a Facebook Page?

When you convert your personal profile to a Facebook Page, we’ll transfer your current profile picture and add your friends and followers as people who like your Page. Your account’s username will become the username for your Page, and the name on your personal account will become your Page’s name. If you want your Page to have a different name, consider creating a new Page.

No other information or things you’ve shared will be moved over to your new Page, so be sure to save any important info before converting your account. You can:

Download your info, such as your sent and received messages and the photos and videos you’ve uploaded to Facebook.
Appoint a new group admin to any groups you manage. You’ll be unable to manage groups once the conversion begins.

When you’re ready to convert your personal account to a Facebook Page:

Go to Profile to Page Migration
Click to choose a category for your Page
Select a more specific category from the dropdown menu and fill out the required information
Click Get Started and follow the on-screen instructions.

How do I create a Facebook Business Page?

To create a Page:

Go to facebook.com/pages/create.
Click to choose a Page category.
Select a more specific category from the dropdown menu and fill out the required information.

How do I give someone a role on my Page?

You’ll need to be an admin to give someone a role on your Page. If you’re an admin:

Click Settings at the top of your Page.
Click Page Roles in the left column.
If the person is your Facebook friend, begin typing their name and select them from the list that appears. If the person isn’t your Facebook friend, type their email address.
Click Admin to select a role from the dropdown menu.
Click Save and enter your password to confirm.

Depending on their settings, the person may receive a notification or an email when you give them a role.

In an attempt to create the “definitive resource” for all open Web technologies, Apple, Adobe, Facebook, Google, HP, Microsoft, Mozilla, Nokia, and Opera have joined the W3C to launch a new website called ‘Web Platform‘

The new website will serve as a single source of relevant, up-to-date and quality information on the latest HTML5, CSS3, and other Web standards, offering tips on web development and best practises for the technologies.

According to the W3C, the website will also display the status of a particular technology’s standardisation and cross-browser implementation.

The site exists as a Wiki, allowing employees representing each of the member companies to add their own updates and to contribute to the site. The project has been funded and has a team dedicated to ensuring it is well maintained (the W3C serves as the website’s curator).

Users can interact on the forums or discuss their projects and coding tips on the site’s dedicated IRC channel.

All documents posted to the Web Platform website are licensed under creative commons. While the initial content is provided by the member companies, website visitors are encouraged to share code examples, tips and tricks or any other relevant information using the Wiki.

As Adobe puts it: “It is now up to the web community to help create and maintain the most comprehensive and authoritative reference for web technologies. So, go check it out and start contributing. Document the web!”

Facebook Offers

Bring people to your business with an offer they can claim and share with their friends.

Offers require a budget to run. The amount you pay is based on how many people you want to reach.

There are 3 kinds of offers:

In Store Only: People can show to the staff at your business by printing the offer email or showing it on their smartphones
In Store & Online: People can redeem at your business’s physical location or website
Online Only: People can only redeem your offer by visiting your website

To create an offer:

Go to your Page.
From the sharing tool at the top of your Page’s timeline, click Offer, Event + and then click Offer.
Click the kind of offer you want to make: In Store Only, In Store & Online or Online Only.
If your offer can be redeemed online, type the complete web address where people can redeem it and add an optional redemption code for people to enter. Then click Next.
Type a strong headline for your offer. For example, “Buy one pair of socks, get another pair free.”
Upload a photo for your offer that will stand out in thumbnail size.
You can choose to limit the number of claims by clicking Unlimited and selecting a number from the dropdown.
Set an expiration date by clicking today’s date and clicking a different day in the future.
Add terms and conditions of your offer by clicking Terms.
For in-store offers, add an optional barcode to scan at your business.
Click Preview to review what your offer will look like. We’ll also send you an email with a preview of what the offer email will look like when people claim it.
Click Back to make changes.
When you’re happy with the preview, click Set Budget.
Choose the amount you want to spend to promote your offer. Notice that the estimated reach increases with bigger budgets.
Click Share.

Offers must follow the Pages Terms and are only available on Pages with at least 400 likes.

Offers require a budget to run. The amount you pay is based on how many people you want to reach.

When you’re creating your offer, pick one of the suggested budgets from the dropdown menu, or set a custom budget from the Ads Manager by checking the box next to Promote later using another Facebook Ad tool.

When you create an in-store offer, you can add a scanable barcode that will appear in the email people get when they claim your offer. This makes applying the discount at your register and tracking offer redemptions faster and easier.

Keep in mind that the code will be the same for every person who claims your offer and is not intended to be a way to prevent people from redeeming your offer more than once.

Starting today, you can give real gifts to your friends on Facebook using Gifts.

Gift easily and instantly
You can send gifts from birthday reminders, or from your friend’s timeline.

Choose a gift, attach a card and send. You can post your gift to your friend’s timeline or send it privately. Your friend can then unwrap a preview of the gift and it will show up on their doorstep a few days later.

You can pay right away or add your payment details later. Your friend provides their address.

To make sure they love the gift, they can choose the color, size or flavor that they want, or even exchange it for something else of equal value.

There are hundreds of gifts with more added every day: cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery, a stuffed animal from Gund, or a digital gift card from Starbucks.

Linking Twitter & Facebook

Linking your Twitter account to your Facebook business page is an excellent way to increase your reach while saving on time posting information twice.

1. To get started login to Facebook.

2. Go to this address facebook.com/twitter.

3. Select Your Business Page and click Link To Twitter

4. Login to your Twitter account or Click Authorize App if you are already logged in.

5. Select what updates Facebook will send to Twitter and click save changes.

6. Congratulations, Your Facebook page is now linked to your twitter account.

Now when ever you post an update on Facebook it will also be sent out on Twitter.

Update for Facebook on Apple iOS

Facebook have released an update to the Facebook app for iPhone and iPad that makes keeping up with friends faster and easier. Facebook 5.0 for iOS is twice as fast as the previous version when launching the app, scrolling through news feed and opening photos in feed.

App opens quickly

We’ve rebuilt the app from the ground up, so now the app opens much faster and your news feed and notifications load right when you open Facebook.

Stories scroll smoothly

As you scroll down your news feed, all your friends’ stories appear faster than ever. A banner lets you know when new stories come in, and you can tap once to immediately see the latest updates.

Photos load instantly

Tap on any photo and it opens right away. Pull down to close it with a single swipe.

How to get the update

This update will be available later today. Search for ‘Facebook’ on the App Store.

How To Schedule A Facebook Post

You can prepare a post and schedule it to appear later by adding a date and time in the future before you post it. You can schedule a post up to 6 months in advance in 15-minute intervals.

From your Page’s sharing tool:

Choose the type of post you want to add to your Page
Click the icon in the lower-left of the sharing tool
Choose the future year, month, day, hour and minute when you’d like your post to appear
Click Schedule

If you choose a date in the past, the post will appear immediately at the appropriate place on your Page’s timeline. All times correspond to the current time zone you’re in.

Facebook is updating Photos

Today we’re announcing improvements to the photos section that make viewing photos more enjoyable.

See bigger photos

Now when you click Photos at the top of your timeline, you’ll see larger pictures that fill up the page. You can use the menu to find shots you’re tagged in, pictures you’ve shared and albums you’ve created.

Showcase photos you like

With your Facebook photos all in one section, it’s simple to show friends your favorites. Click the star button to make important photos stand out.

We’ll continue to improve the experience and then begin rolling out globally.

New iOS 6 Features

Here are the new features announced by Apple for iOS 6. There is no word yet if all these features will be available in Ireland.

Post a web link to Facebook right from the web page.

Now you can share just the photos you want, with just the people you choose. Simply select photos from the Photos app, tap the Share button, choose who you want to share your photos with, and they’re on their way. Friends using iCloud on an iOS 6 device or a Mac running Mountain Lion get the photos delivered immediately in the Photos app or iPhoto.³ You can even view shared photo streams on Apple TV. If the folks you’re sharing with aren’t using an Apple device, they can view your photos on the web. People can like individual photos and make comments. And you can share as much as you want: Your shared photo streams don’t count against your iCloud storage, and they work over Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

Your boarding passes, movie tickets, retail coupons, loyalty cards, and more are now all in one place. With Passbook, you can scan your iPhone or iPod touch to check in for a flight, get into a movie, and redeem a coupon. iOS 6 adds new calling features to your iPhone. Now when you decline an incoming call, you can instantly reply with a text message or set a callback reminder. VoiceOver, the revolutionary screen reader for blind and low-vision users, is now integrated with Maps, AssistiveTouch, and Zoom. And Apple is working with top manufacturers to introduce Made for iPhone hearing aids that will deliver a power-efficient, high-quality digital audio experience.⁷

It happens. You misplace your iPhone or your iPad or your iPod touch. Luckily, iOS 6 and iCloud now offer Lost mode, making it even easier to use Find My iPhone to locate and protect a missing device.⁸ Immediately lock your missing iPhone with a four-digit passcode and send it a message displaying a contact number. That way a good Samaritan can call you from your Lock screen without accessing the rest of the information on your iPhone. And while in Lost mode, your device will keep track of where it’s been and report back to you any time you check in with the Find My iPhone app.

Find My Friends is a great way to share locations with friends and family.⁸ Those who share their locations with you appear on a map so you can quickly see where they are and what they’re up to. And with iOS 6, you can get location-based alerts — like when your kids leave school or arrive home. Find My Friends can also notify others about your location, so you can stay connected or keep track of the ones you love.

iOS 6 brings a new kind of shopping experience to the redesigned iTunes Store, App Store, and iBookstore. See the best of what’s new in music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books at the top of each store’s home page. Browse with a swipe of your finger and tap to learn more. Keep track of the music, movies, and TV shows you previewed by tapping the History button, and when you’re ready, tap Buy to add something to your collection. With iCloud, your preview history is always up to date on all your devices. So you can start shopping on your iPhone and continue on your iPad. And now you can buy your favorite music, apps, and more without leaving the app you’re in.

With improved text input and built-in support for popular Chinese Internet services, iOS 6 makes iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch even better for Chinese-speaking users. With a new Chinese dictionary and improved text input, typing in Chinese is easier, faster, and more accurate. You can mix full and abbreviated Pinyin and even type English words in a Pinyin sentence without switching keyboards. With support for over 30,000 characters, iOS 6 more than doubles the number of Chinese characters supported in handwriting recognition. And when you add words to your personal dictionary, iCloud makes them available on all your devices. Baidu is a built-in option in Safari, and you can share videos directly to Youku and Tudou.
