If you’re running a small business, your website is often doing a lot of heavy lifting in the background — showing people what you do, building trust, and (hopefully) bringing in enquiries.
The problem is: most websites don’t “break” in an obvious way. They just slowly get out of date, a bit slower, a bit less clear… and you only notice when enquiries drop off or something stops working.
So to kick off 2026, here are 7 quick checks you can do this month to make sure your website is working foryou.
1) Check your contact details (and test them)
This is the simplest one — and the most important.
Make sure:
- Your phone number is correct and clickable on mobile
- Your email address is correct
- Your contact form actually sends messages (do a quick test)
If a customer can’t contact you easily, they’ll move on.
2) Make sure your website is secure (HTTPS)
If your website shows “Not Secure” in the browser, it can put people off immediately.
Quick check:
- Your website should load as https:// (not http://)
Security also matters for Google rankings and general trust.
3) Update WordPress (safely)
Updates keep your website secure and running smoothly — but they need to be done properly.
At a minimum:
- WordPress core, theme, and plugins should be up to date
- You should have a recent backup (just in case)
- Nothing should look “off” after updates (menus, layout, forms)
4) Check your website speed (especially on mobile)
Most people will view your site on their phone. If it’s slow, you’ll lose them before they even read what you offer.
Quick test:
- Open your homepage on your phone using mobile data (not Wi‑Fi)
- If it feels sluggish, it’s worth fixing
Common causes are large images, heavy plugins, or hosting that’s underpowered.
5) Look at your homepage like a new customer
Small businesses often have great services — but the website doesn’t always explain them clearly.
Ask yourself:
- Is it obvious what you do within 5 seconds?
- Is it clear who your service is for?
- Is there a clear next step (Call / Email / Request a Quote)?
Clarity beats clever every time.
6) Check your key pages (services, pricing, about)
You don’t need loads of pages — you just need the right ones to be up to date.
Check:
- Services: accurate and easy to understand
- About: still reflects your business today
- Pricing: even a “starting from” range helps reduce time-wasters
7) Add one trust booster
People don’t just buy based on what you say — they buy based on what others say about you.
Easy trust boosters:
- A recent testimonial
- A photo of recent work
- A short “Here’s how it works” section (to reduce uncertainty)
Even one strong piece of proof can lift enquiries.
